We’re looking for a backend-focused full stack engineer to take full technical ownership of two live, business-critical systems — a Laravel web application and an AI-powered chatbot backend with a custom MCP server. These systems are already in production and serving real users. Your job is to keep them stable, improve them over time, and ship what the business needs.

You’ll go through a structured handoff with full documentation and walkthroughs, then take the wheel independently. This is an execution-heavy role for someone who thrives in production environments, debugs across stacks without waiting to be unblocked, and treats system reliability as a point of professional pride.

What You’ll Be Doing

Production Ownership & Stability

• Take full technical ownership of two live production systems
• Prioritize uptime, reliability, and operational continuity across both systems
• Troubleshoot production issues quickly and implement sustainable fixes
• Maintain deployment pipelines, environment configurations, and release processes
• Ensure systems remain secure, stable, and scalable as usage grows

Backend Development

• Maintain and improve Laravel and Node.js/Express codebases across both systems
• Build and deploy new features based on stakeholder requirements
• Debug backend logic, application issues, and cross-stack problems independently
• Maintain and extend REST API integrations and internal automation workflows
• Manage and troubleshoot custom MCP server architecture for AI chatbot functionality
• Improve code quality, maintainability, and technical documentation over time

Data & Integrations

• Write optimized SQL queries for reporting, analytics, and operational tasks (MySQL + PostgreSQL)
• Debug and maintain third-party API integrations including HubSpot, QuickBooks, and Google APIs
• Monitor database performance and implement optimizations as needed
• Ensure integrations remain functional, resilient, and observable

What Success Looks Like

• Both systems remain stable, operational, and monitored — with minimal unplanned downtime
• Stakeholder feature requests are delivered efficiently and without breaking existing functionality
• Bugs are resolved quickly with root cause identified, not just patched
• SQL reports and data pulls are accurate, timely, and repeatable
• Third-party integrations stay functional even when upstream APIs change
• Documentation improves over time, making both systems easier for the next engineer to understand

Who We’re Looking For

Mid-to-senior engineer with 3+ years of hands-on production experience. We’re not looking for someone who builds greenfield apps — we’re looking for someone who has owned running systems and knows what that actually requires.

You’re the right fit if you:

• Can step into an existing codebase, understand its architecture, and take ownership within weeks
• Are highly reliable in production: you don’t ship blind, you don’t ignore alerts, and you communicate clearly when things go wrong
• Think like an owner, not a task executor — you ask why before you ask how
• Debug independently across multiple stacks without waiting to be unblocked
• Are comfortable with legacy code and ambiguity; you clean as you go without over-engineering
• Prioritize stability first, improvement second — you understand the cost of breaking production

Technical Requirements

Must-Have

• PHP and Laravel — 3+ years, production experience required
• Node.js and Express.js — backend services, APIs, and async workflows
• MySQL and PostgreSQL — schema design, query writing, performance tuning, and debugging
• REST API architecture — building, consuming, and maintaining integrations
• Third-party API experience — HubSpot, QuickBooks, Google APIs, or similar
• Git and version control workflows in a team environment
• Deployment experience — Railway, VPS, or equivalent cloud platforms
• Proven ability to inherit, understand, and own unfamiliar production systems
